The University of Miami women’s tennis team finished up its annual Miami Spring Invite with 18 total wins on the weekend.
On the first day, the Hurricanes notched three singles wins and three doubles wins to open the tournament. No. 90 Isabella Pfennig took down No. 58 Destinee Martins (TCU), 6-1, 6-2, while No. 81 Audrey Boch-Collins defeated Chiho Mushika (TCU), 6-3, 6-1. Newcomer Xinyi Nong claimed the third win after taking down Raquel Caballero (TCU), 5-7, 6-1, 6-1.
In doubles, all three pairings found success. Nong and Pfennig teamed up to win 6-4 over Martins and Isabel Pascual (TCU). Then, Antonia Balzert and Alexa Noel defeated Helena Narmont and Mushika (TCU), 6-2, while Leonie Schuknecht and Boch-Collins claimed the 6-3 win over Jade Otway and Caballero (TCU).
Miami added four more wins in singles on the second day. Two Canes grabbed ranked wins with No. 25 Noel taking down over No. 24 Bridget Stammel (Vanderbilt), 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, and Nong defeating No. 95 Holly Staff (Vanderbilt), 6-4, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (3). Balzert then claimed a victory against Anessa Lee (Vanderbilt), 7-5, 6-4, while No. 81 Boch-Collins secured the 6-1, 6-1 win over Amy Stevens (Vanderbilt).
The Hurricanes grabbed two more doubles wins with Noel and Nong winning 6-1 over Celia-Belle Mohr and Lee (Vanderbilt) and Pfennig and Schuknecht taking down Stammel and Ray, 7-6 (5).
Miami was successful on the final day of competition after walking away with four singles wins and two doubles wins. Noel took down Olivia Lincer (UCF), 6-4, 6-4, and Pfennig claimed the 6-3, 6-2 win over Jantje Tilbuerger. The other two wins came from Boch-Collins over Jaleesa Leslie (UCF) 6-2, 6-1 and Schuknecht over Anique Kattenberg 6-2, 7-5.
Noel and Nong secured a hard-fought 6-4 win over Saidenova and Kattenberg, while Pfennig and Boch-Collins battled to a 7-5 win against Leslie and Biolay.
The Hurricanes will start their season on Thursday, Jan. 18 against cross-town rival FIU. There will be free tacos and margaritas served to the first 100 in attendance. So we suggest that you show up early!
We KNOW you don't care.
But we DON'T care!

Great Job Lady Canes Tennis Team!

Nice article about the tennis team, and even free margaritas? For those who love the U and tennis, this is your chance.
Re: U football (what else), former Cane Jaleel Skinner goes to Louisville, Breshard Smith to SMU (UM West given the coach), and beginning to wonder if soon to be former Cane, Jacolby (Bonehead) George, still at the U but arrested (pair of misdemeanors) over the weekend near Daytona for racing on the hwy, etc. After his Pinhead...er, Pinstripe Bowl performance, one has to wonder if the coaching staff's patience might wear thin by spring. I hope he gets it together. Also, I thought I saw a few d/a that Jamil Burroughs, the former Bama DT who got into an altercation with the Bama head of player development who transferred to the U in August, is no longer with the team (wasn't eligible this past season anyway). Since the team was a good at least 5 players over the so-called limit, a little bit of pruning is necessary, and then we'll see who does what with the spring portal when folks get a better idea of what the depth will look like, and who the U might still bring in (maybe a big WR will still come our way?).
Looking forward to hoops vs FSU manana. Go, Canes.

Truly miserable to watch, other than a brief second half run that almost closed the gap. Agree fully, Terrance. He did UM in vs. FSU two years in a row. I hope Coach L is able to get this group figured out.
On the positive side for the U, Mishael Powell, a versatile DB (ie CB or S) with a year of eligibility left from U Wash who just finished a visit to UF, has announced he's transferring to UM. This is a needed pickup that allows the young DBs more time to develop. We have Leland Smith, a 6'4 to 5" (who knows which is right?) speedy JuCo WR from Houston, coming for a visit later this mth. With Ward now in the fold and the need for a tall WR other than Horton, I think the U will go after him hard, and there is interest.
I'm not drinking any Kool-Aid, as I've been a fan for too many years since 2001, but I like the moves/potential moves. As the new folks get added, I expect at least 9-10 players will be entering the portal in the spring to make space.

Leonard Hamilton, a hell of a basketball coach, will win a game when you insist on losing it from the free throw line by missing 10 free throws in a nine point loss because the roster depth and length he dresses will harass you into a poor shooting night from deep. They deserved to win this one since Miami wanted to be sloppy with possession and refused to consistently win the rebounding battle outside of Omier who in this game particularly needed more size at center and forward on the floor with him to get to an advantageous match up physically defensively.
Saturday will be a tough test again on the road if banged up in the starting rotation still, Syracuse will not let a zone get them shot out of the game from behind the arc this year.
ACC officiating literally refusing to pointedly whistle the litigious felonious sexual-assault university into the cellar at this point every single competition played is a yet another reason this stupid conference can't die fast enough for my taste, now with infinite more terrible west coast teams and a decent fit in Dallas to cover the bases of departures for TV contract purposes for what good that's worth.

OGV, agreed - we just looked sloppy last night.
From ESPN:
stat line by double-agent Matthew Cleveland: 2 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 turnovers, 1/8 from the floor.

Looks like the carcass of much of Bama's top players/recruits is ripe for the picking, with OSU, UGa, UTexas, etc. all jumping in. Caleb Downs and likely Sayin to OSU. Every school with a coaching change (Bama, Arizona, UW) is having huge outflows of players during the 30 day windows in this era of craziness. There is something to be said about knowing your head coach isn't going anywhere.
Meanwhile, UF gets investigated about the Jaden Rashada fiasco. For those who don't remember, he was a top dual threat QB recruit who verbaled to UM before he flipped to UF, but ultimately went to ASU:
https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/2024/01/19/florida-is-under-ncaa-investigation-a-year-after-a-failed-nil-deal-with-qb-signee-jaden-rashada/72288328007/
No love lost for the turds, but how far will an investigation go with U Mich, and how come OSU never seems to get into any trouble? What about Bama over the years? Good old boys club?
Noon tipoff tomorrow for Coach L and the boys at Syracuse tomorrow, for those interested.

So WP decides to play like Arse this Game and cost us the Game and most likely a NCAA Tournament Bid. Losing Wong and Miller I knew would be huge but it's enormous not only their talent but their leadership. We Got 2 Veteran Leaders on this team who were the 3rd and 4th best players on Last Years Team in Norchard and Nigel. WP is talented but not a leader and he ain't Wong. MC is talented but he ain't Miller. Casey is a 5 Stars of Arse. Coach L better not bring him back next year. Bensley is cool as the 6th Man. Keyshawn is really that guy if he comes back next year he will easily be the best player on the team. Just disappointing season.

More than just one player out. Omier has a broken ankle, I believe and it doesn’t look good, going forward. But miracles do happen. I love my Canes and hope they improve.
Looking forward to getting to Satellite Beach FL tomorrow. Very cold up here in Michigan. Low of 7 tomorrow morning. My hear t bills will be horrible, but who cares. Go Canes!!🟩🟧💚🧡

Injuries, sloppy play and lack of depth are putting this basketball season in jeopardy quickly. Sigh...Truly hope Omier's injury isn't as serious as some rumors say.
Football moves/potential moves today:
Rodney Hill, RB from FSU who was transferring to FAMU til his HC signed with Manny to be a coach with Duke, signs as a preferred walk-on at the U. Although it isn't a position of need, we all know RB injuries can come fast and furious, and he is a veteran who can catch, while also assisting with keeping an archrival honest (since all transfers between programs require playbooks be adjusted more regularly than maybe they used to be).
UWash starting LG, Nate Kalepo, 6'6" and 320 something lbs. and started all 15 games this past season, was in Coral Gables today on an OV. Since the U doesn't have many OVs left to give at this point, this one could have some juice to it. Also, given that this is the one spot on the OL that isn't necessarily spoken for yet, having a guy with 1 year of eligibility left could work out well (much like it did for Javion Cohen last year).
We have Ward, make a very good OL better (maybe?), and then see what happens in the spring regarding other additions/subtractions.

Hope that was a typo and you meant your heat bills rather than heart bills, Mary Lou. Safe travels.

Turns out Boeheim was just a lazy coach for decades and that it's not hard to figure out how to play decent man to man defense in no time at all huh? Who would have guessed outside the media that wouldn't stop carrying water for that weak zone scheme at a school they went to?
Cleveland played all 40 minutes and Miami needs that guy who showed up this last game the rest of the way. Miami did not do enough disrupting defensively to win this game despite the clear officiating bias toward the home team. Poplar's two early fouls because ACC refs were going to weigh in on the final score margin yet again really disrupted his flow and being down their best player from the start was too much a siphon of talent from the roster to be able to overcome a 3 to 1 foul shot discrepancy and a 4 to 3 foul ratio discrepancy on the road. The defending league champions taking each team's best shot was probably the final deciding factor though, so enjoy celebrating like you won something in the regular season barely winning at home against an unranked team that's banged up in training table room I guess, they're used to weak parades like that up in New York these days I gather.
Wednesday will offer no quarter, so circle the wagons and get Nwoko ready to contribute more because the announcers are already edging up his high school ranking to a whole four stars since they have to sell some sizzle instead of steak for the team at this point, next thing you know people will be crying he's not doing enough for such a touted prospect despite the fact he was just some big Canadian guy who was overlooked due to location and lower level competition. If this loss is what it takes to get this version of Cleveland to play the rest of his minutes this season, I'll take a buzzer beater loss because he was the best player on that floor for once this season and that will get them where they want to go again if he keeps it up and becomes their legit 1st offensive option, allowing Poplar and Pack to be options #1A and #2 respectively. Not having a center six inches too short can be a blessing in disguise for a few weeks and if that's what sinks this season, they weren't a tournament team to start with anyway.
Posted by: orange 'n green in the vein | January 21, 2024 at 08:06 AM
Sayin to OSU, Air Noland was already committed. Does OSU somehow keep 2 incoming 5 star qb recruits or does bringing in Sayin create a domino effect and cause Noland to look elsewhere? College football has gone crazy with transfers and NIL.

Omier was most of the offense in the first 2/3 of the game, not sure what's going on with Poplar, George is getting more action and showing a lot of hustle, not sure how much the injury is going to limit Cleveland in the near-term, but this team has to find a way to get through all of the injuries. They did a good job in the last quarter of the game pulling away on the road. Kudos.
Now, the craziness begin at U Mich...
Posted by: JCane | January 25, 2024 at 09:39 AM
Cleveland pulled an adductor or abductor, perhaps hamstring too, it looked like, was playing very aggressively leading up to that. George as a point power forward essentially is a match up problem in a lot of nights right now for UM's favor. Joseph is letting his left foot, since he's a left hand shot release, drift forward on jumpers and needs to kick it into the line to get square to the rim more but is still able to create for himself in transition off defense against winded starters of other teams, so they're lucky to have essentially seven roster worthy starters as banged up as they are right now. Still too many turnovers which must be cleaned up and Poplar can't let defense's scheme him out of a threat to go for 20 any night consistently down the stretch.
Posted by: orange 'n green in the vein | January 25, 2024 at 12:12 PM
Any win against Notre Shame puts a smile on my face LOL.
OGV - watched the second half of the game last night - George is growing up before our eyes - seems more confident. Really like him. Agreed, too many turnovers. We are missing our pickpocket Isaiah Wong. I hope Omier plays himself into the draft - he really plays hard
