Alexa Noel is bringing the NCAA Singles Championship trophy back to the University of Miami after a three-set thriller at the Greenwood Tennis Center.
For the third time in program history, a Miami Hurricane has earned the NCAA Singles title (Audra Cohen in 2007 and Estela Perez-Somarriba in 2019). Noel secured the honor after a 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 victory against No. 70 Anastasiia Lopata from Georgia.
“I’m so proud of the tournament that Alexa played,” said head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews. “She showed uncompromising poise and the toughness of a champion. She’s a special young lady.”
Lopata was first to notch a game before Noel answered right back to tie it up and secure the break point to go up 2-1. The Bulldog didn’t waiver from it, as she took the next break point against Noel to lead 3-2. In a tight point to give Lopata the possible advantage, Georgia led 4-3, hoping to go up with only one more game to claim the set. Noel persevered to take the game and tied it up at 4-4. Lopata continued to do what she did and kept the game at her pace, leading to a 6-4 set win for Georgia.
Set two started the same way, with Lopata taking the lead and earning the 2-0 advantage. Noel didn’t stray away from fighting to cut the deficit, as she came up big with a break point to make it 3-2 and ultimately tie it at three-all. The remainder of the set mirrored the same way, until Noel took the lead on break point, 6-5, for her first lead since the first set at 2-1. The Hurricane went on and took the set, 7-5, to even the match.
The first five games were back-and-forth on ties and leads. Noel started to pull away after a 3-2 lead, pushing it to 5-2. Lopata went on to take her last game of the set, before Noel claimed the set, 6-3.
The accolade marks Yaroshuk-Tews’ third career NCAA Singles Champion and second in the past five tournaments.
Ted Cruz speaking about college athletics
On the other hand, where we are now in college athletics is the Wild West. We have wide-open bidding wars. We have athletes moving from school to school to school and not having any loyalty to any institution. Not having the esprit de corps of the fan base and the alumni base. We have a real risk of chaos ensuing and fundamental damage occurring to college athletics, which would be a travesty.
The current path we’re on could very quickly lead to a handful of super schools with virtually unlimited budgets having all the best talent and the other schools left not able to be competitive, which does real damage to the quality of athletics overall. It’s no fun to watch an N.B.A. team play a J.V. team. For sports to be fun, you need some kind of parity where you have a real contest. There is also, I fear, a serious risk of all of the focus being on major conferences, football and basketball, and women’s sports being neglected, nonrevenue sports being neglected. One of the most important things about college sports is that it has provided an avenue for thousands upon thousands of young men and young women to be able to get a college education who would not otherwise have gotten a college education. And I think it is critically important that we preserve and protect that path.

Great job by Alexa Noel, and nicely written article at the space.
Looks like Barrow played the here today gone tomorrow game with the U. College football teams are gonna look like revolving doors for many going forward. Who needs to have favorite players, huh? That being said, I have no idea of the circumstances.
Posted by: JCane | May 31, 2024 at 03:17 PM
Do dedication to a goal, just players looking to get paid and if not move on. The college game will be trash. The big boys will continue to rule and rake the top 100 players and get who they want from the portal. There will be parity for all but 6 to 8 teams and those 6 to 8 will dominate but I also don't expect to see anyone coming from the big 10 or SEC going undefeated.

Hi everyone! It’s been a while. Still in Florida. Sold my condo, ($1100.00 a month maintenance fee! Ridiculous! Bought a house with a pool. We shall see how it goes. Can’t wait for football season to start!🟧🟩

That’s ridiculous. That’s close to a rental payment!
Posted by: TonyCane | June 01, 2024 at 09:46 PM
Barrow is kind of stuck. He already enrolled. If he transfers, he has to sit out a year and would potentially pay his own way at another school.
Posted by: TonyCane | June 01, 2024 at 09:47 PM
TonyCane, you are absolutely right and I appreciate your opinion. Florida is so damn expensive, whether you own or rent. Now I will wait for the November tax bill and see how much money that is. Can’t win for losin’. I sold my oceanfront condo and bought a house, thinking that it would be better. We shall see.
What’s your opinion on our football season? Right around the corner!!
We play in the Swamp first!! How nice to beat them both. Love my Canes, Class of 1970!!!!🧡💚🟩🟧

How are we supposed to do in the fall?? What are your football predictions? I will be 76 in July and time is flying for this old Cane broad? Curious to get your take on the football season.

With all the juice we have, I don't see us losing in the regular season but we have been know to choke against lesser teams, so we'll figure out how to lose one.
This schedule was hand crafted for us to roll.

Roll, Roll, Roll! Win, win, win!! We will know better after the first 2 games. Scared of the game in the Swamp.🟧🟩

It looks like Barrow's back in the fold and the soap opera is over for now.
That got me wondering ... after another season or two we'll have seen hundreds of players jumping from team to team for more money or playing time. Teams competing against one another to offer the same players more money, perks or playing time, and who knows, maybe even guarantees of some kind.
After a while, we'll all start recognizing the patterns, moves and strategies each side uses and then we'll start giving them names as shorthand.
In my mind, the names for those strategies could be the same ones already used for football plays:
Reverse, Counter, Draw, Option, Trap,
Bootleg, Pass, Power, and of course, Hail Mary.

Thankfully Old Skool we have a fairly robust collective that is definitely keeping Miami in the portal game, while at the same time doing very well in high school recruiting.
Florida State on the other hand seems to have devoted the vast majority of its NIL funds just to the portal.

That's our toughest game, because of so many new personnel and playing on a hostile field.
If we win that, there's a good shot we go 12-0.

NIL coming to a high school near you! What could possibly go wrong?

Just a FYI you two left out a big rivalry Game and ACC Opener at Home against VT on Friday September 27th. Anyways Go Canes!
Posted by: Terrance Sullivan | June 06, 2024 at 01:33 AM
It's not a rivalry game. The Big Least and the chokie fanbase were desperate for national relevancy and tried to force a rivalry through repetitive stating one is there that doesn't exist between the programs because one team always sucks and the other has national relevancy no matter how many decades pass since 2001. Pitt and BC are more real rivals for UM from the Big Least than the chokies are, ever were, or will be. Yearly forced scheduling them again in football is yet another reason the self dealing conference can't die soon enough for my taste.

Solid addition, good size, might not start but will be relied on to sink free throws late with a lead to land games safely in the W column. At least they won't be losing constantly this season due to lack of height and depth like last season's team shat the bed because of.

Just arrived back in Michigan today. Up at 4 a.m. Melbourne to Charlotte, then Charlotte to Detroit. Long day. Hope everyone is good.
I flew home because my Richard took a nasty fall and is in the hospital. He’s all black and blue and at 86, I worry. Please say a prayer for him. We aren’t married, but we have been together for 40 years, next week.
Love him to death and I need a prayer from all of you.❤️
Then I can watch Canes football, this fall, with a full heart.

Posted by: orange 'n green in the vein | June 07, 2024 at 05:17 AM
Last year's team: [lack of height} + [lack of depth] = [too many losses].
So, whose fault was that?
Posted by: W | June 07, 2024 at 03:58 PM
So UF and FSU are in the college World Series and we ended with a losing record and retain arteaga! What a shame that our once GREAT baseball program is now horrible!
Posted by: AeroCane | June 09, 2024 at 10:16 PM
Well Aero, 2 of a better players hit the portal, albeit they were injuried and out for the year, Torres & Cyr our #2 & #3 pitchers stunk. Our midweek starters were junk and had a laundry list of IR players. Our pitching has not been up to snuff in a minute and our defense has been like a sieve.
Is JD the answer as a coach? We'll see how the portal goes but if this season was any indication of things to come, he's got next year and that's it.
No way in hell, with the resources, weather and talent everywhere in Florida, that we should have a losing record, regardless of injuries.

We always watch the Miami Hurricanes together have been to a few away games. I love him so very much.GO CANES!!! GET BETTER, MY RICHARD.❤️

Anxious for the football season to start in the fall. Th last game I was at was in Syracuse, New York, back in the day. Ken Dorsey was the quarterback and put in a Magnificent Performance. Finest throw that I ever saw. Looked right, arm back and threw a direct shot to the left and hit his target. 🟧🟩🧡💚
