Here are some key storylines, numbers of note and quotes from Miami’s 56-9 win over Florida A&M, a win that helped the Hurricanes move up two spots to #10 in this week’s Associated Press Top 25 and to #12 in the coaches poll.
The Recap
Another week, another fast start for the Hurricanes.
After scoring on six of their first eight possessions against Florida last week, Miami needed just six plays to score its first touchdown of the year at Hard Rock Stadium – even though FAMU had the ball to open the game.
Linebacker Wesley Bissainthe picked off Rattlers’ quarterback Daniel Richardson on FAMU’s first drive and two plays later, the Hurricanes capitalized.
Miami quarterback Cam Ward – who earned a plethora of honors after his 385-yard performance against Florida – made his first throw at Hard Rock Stadium count, connecting with Elijah Arroyo on a 17-yard scoring strike that gave Miami the early lead.
The Hurricanes wouldn’t look back after that.
Miami added two more touchdowns in the first half, with Ward having a hand in both.
Midway through the first quarter, Ward connected with wide receiver Xavier Restrepo for a 50-yard touchdown and early in the second, Ward found running back Chris Johnson, Jr. for a 9-yard touchdown.
Ward finished the day competing 20 of 26 passes for 304 yards with three touchdowns, while Restrepo had four catches for a game-high 104 yards.
In the second half, Miami’s deep running backs room showed its ability to produce with Mark Fletcher Jr., Damien Martinez and Jordan Lyle scoring on touchdown runs of 4, 33, and 1-yards respectively.
The Hurricanes defense did a solid job in Saturday’s win, keeping the Rattlers out of the end zone and holding FAMU to a total of just 190 yards, including just 52 rushing yards.
“Fast start and then offensively, got in a little bit of a rut there. [We] made some careless errors. We’ve got to coach and play that part better, but a really good response in the second half, albeit some of the penalties, the post-half penalties, which we have to be better at,” Hurricanes head coach Mario Cristobal said. “All in all, it was good to play a lot of players tonight. Certainly, a lot of young guys got action and actually played at a high level, particularly the defensive line. They seemed to get relentless pressure on the quarterback and do a good job stopping the run. Good to see those freshman linebackers get in there and get a couple interceptions, as well. All in all, we handled our business and [there are] lots of areas to get better at.”
Numbers to Know
18 – Number of consecutive home openers the Hurricanes have now won. That’s the longest such streak in program history.
3 – Sacks registered by defensive lineman Tyler Baron against FAMU. According to the Associated Press, Baron is the eighth Hurricane to notch three sacks in a game over the last 20 seasons.
10 – Spot now owned by Restrepo on Miami’s all-time career receiving yards list. With his 104-yard performance against FAMU, Restrepo now has 1,933 career receiving yards. He passed Andre Johnson (1,831) and Allen Hurns (1,891) on the career list and has now notched eight 100-yard performances during his Hurricanes career.
308 – Total points scored by kicker Andy Borregales during his Miami career after the senior converted on a field goal and five extra points against FAMU. Borregales has now passed Greg Cox for fifth on Miami’s all-time points scored list.
12 – Number of Hurricanes who caught at least one pass in Saturday’s win. It marks the second straight week more than 10 players have caught a pass in game action. Last week against Florida, 11 different Hurricanes registered at least one catch.

Thirty six point home favorite over the Cardinals of Ball State from Muncie, Indianna.
I like them to cover a first half favorite spread more than prevent a late reserve unit surrender on the cover of that spread for the entire game, maybe I remain to be convinced.

OGV...I bet San Fran to beat the speard (-4) and the over (43) last night and won on both.

On the college games I am better at picking winners, but on NFL I am better when I bet the O/U. One strategy is to look at the lowest and highest O/U points for all games and bet the contrarian position. Lowest O/U bet the over, highest O/U bet the under. Works most of the time so far!

I watched highlights of the UM game against FAMU and there are still a lot of things to clean up on D. Several blown coverages resulted in big gains for Rattlers. Offense was better but not as impressive as the 56 points may have appeared on face value.

Point totals are so weather dependent I've always believed, so it's not a terrible strategy, just as long as you can search up the likely local weather forecast and not get caught in a literal storm going over a low number, or under two dome teams inside on a fast artificial playing surface in a race to first team to 40.
College overs this year seem a little more reliable than last year, since this season is the first played where teams can stop the clock being prudent with second half timeouts up to four times in the last 2:30-3:00 minutes of closer games.
If Ward's going to make a legit Heisman run in the latter half of the season, he'll need to step on the stat accumulation in the three quarters of play he'll likely only see Saturday. Ball State isn't a terrible defense, for a MAC level roster but trenches line of scrimmage play is going to be a difficult battle for them to wage an attrition fight four an hour, due to how the roster has been built from nearest the snap out, with UM.

"Four quarters" or alternatively "an hour", not 'four an hour.'
My post editor is holding out for a raise this year apparently.

OGV:
Does anyone think MC would have left Ward in vs FAMU as long as he did, risking injury and the season, if there weren't a promise to boost Ward's individual stats, too? Hmm. Wad it his acrobatic TD run or breaking 300 yards that was the signal that his night was done, even though the outcome was already decided long before.

OGV...O/U at 55.5 for UM vs BS? Bet the over?
Posted by: 58 Straight | September 12, 2024 at 12:28 AM
Yeah definitely bet the Over. Go Canes!

Good weather will probably get a final to go over that. I didn't even watch the cupcake scrimmage game so I don't know if 2nd team defense will provide enough garbage time stops to keep it below that outside of poor field conditions.

MLALUMNI 1970, DON'T GET A COLONOSCOPY My wife for 47 years went in for a Colonoscopy, after telling her I will see you in about 45 minutes, love you,
after waiting 3 hours, asking over and over where is my wife? A nurse showed up said she was in her room waiting for Emergency surgery. She took me to her room. I thought we were in the wrong room, I started backing out, nurse said what's wrong Mr. Miller. I said that's not my wife. She's on Life Support a Specialty surgeon is on her way. Turned out the Doctor perforated her colon. After five days she came off life support and didn't know what happened. It was the hardest things I
ever had to tell her.
Long story short, after 30 days many spent crying, she came home from hospital. It did a lot of damage to her body. three months Later, January 9th 2009 She went to heaven while sleeping on my shoulder.
My life changed forever like yours. Many times people say, I know what you are going through,
I say no you don't, you only know if you go through it yourself.
Marylu, I prayed for you asked Jesus to look after you and if I should send this to you, I Guess you know the answer. God bless you.
I have told three of my friends not to get a Colonoscopy, two of them didn't listen ended up with a perverted colon and colostomy bag.
There is a different way, called a Cologuard that I and Tom use now. Cancel your appointment and ask your personal doctor about a Cologard. It's A very simple way to check yo

YES Marylou, do not do the colonoscopy. My experience left me bleeding badly and checking into the hospital emergency room late at night and at risk of Sepsis. Do the ColoGuard Test. Severasl people have died doing colonospcopies for the doctors $$$!

I just saw a stat that the Dolphins were 10-1 against losing teams and they were 1-5 against winning teams last season. It seems to be playing out again in Miami tonight.

I had the Cologuard test, and it came back positive. My father died of colon cancer. Now, I am totally confused and scared. I don’t understand why these doctors are not better, these days. Do you think I should cancel, even after the Cologuard positive test??
Posted by: MLALUMNI 1970 | September 13, 2024 at 11:50 AM
If the Cologuard test is positive, do the colonoscopy. U don't have a choice really after that.
If it found polyps (positive test), they have to do colonoscopy to remove them
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | September 13, 2024 at 01:15 PM
PS - I understand being wary for some of U who dealt with horrible situations, but those are rare, and Cologuard only detects 42% of polyps, while colonoscopy detects 95%
AND if Cologuard detects, U still have to do colonoscopy

Thank you everyone. Since the Cologuard came back positive, and my father, died of colon cancer, I am, reluctantly, going ahead with it. Maybe the doctors are better up here, in Michigan. My RN cousin, said that this is a good place for me to go to.
If the Canes keep winning, maybe that will help, too. Love all of you, and prayers for me, on Tuesday.💚🧡
