Hurricane Hoopsters Open With Exhibition Win

The University of Miami men’s basketball team defeated the Saint Leo Lions, 94-61, Wednesday night at the Watsco Center in the Hurricanes’ first and only exhibition contest of the season.

Five Hurricanes reached double-figures in the game, paced by graduate student Nijel Pack, who poured in 18 points on 8-of-17 shooting.

As a team, Miami dished 20 assists and outrebounded the Lions, 43-28. Senior Brandon Johnson led the Hurricanes on the boards with 12 total rebounds.

Nine different Hurricanes tallied a basket in the first half, with a trio of players – sophomore Paul Djobet (11), Pack (11) and freshman Jalil Bethea (10) – scoring in double-figures through the first 20 minutes of action. As a team, Miami shot 51.4 percent from the field in the first half to take a 54-24 lead into the halftime break.

Graduate student Lynn Kidd came alive in the second half, scoring 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting. The Hurricanes outscored the Lions, 40-37, in the final 20 minutes of play to seal the 94-61 victory.

Miami opens the 2024-25 season on Mon., Nov. 4 against Fairleigh Dickinson. Tipoff in the Watsco Center is set for 7 p.m. and the game will air on ACC Network Extra.

Man, our D stinks! This shouldn’t be this close of a game. What an embarrassment this so far in the game. We are #5 in the nation and we are playing like we aren’t even ranked. We will definitely struggle against these in the top 4 playing like this!

You got it Yooper.....not tackling stupid penalties cant catch the ball don't run routes complete to fight for a ball cant cover and sleepwalking the whole time.....Duke is not a bad team their D is good....they are disciplined and focused....watch the QB s eyes he's alert and ready....they want to win....we are enjoying the sunshine and over rated ranking

we want to coast just like we did against the first few teams who were no competition....my HS team would have beat a couple of them....I would say we are top 20....but not top 5....Clemson beats us easily if we play like this...sometimes you just coast...why? it's easier we been loving easy since 2003 easy is always nicer...you do not have to work for anything and people tolerate mediocre....not my AZZ!!!....we been coasting since game 4 to me...do't like it at all!

CMC is fading with me as a coach....he is not fiery at all.....check that Dunlop tire hanging over his belt grey head casual attitude never gets mad....it is hard for me to associate him with our past....honestly I do not remember him at all as a difference maker. He is like your uncle now....came back home yea old Cane eating seafood drinking beer at all the seafood places for free cause he WAS from the past getting fat....no fire in that fat belly....the guy that replaced him is challenging Big 10 powers beat OSU....Lanning wants to win......just like he said about Deion...."they are fighting for clicks we are fighting for wins" Damn right I want wins and hits that hurt people....we aint hitting hating hurting....we want the clicks F**k clicks....time to make a choice....do you want to win and punish people unmercifully....or enjoy the sun and fun and false praise and pride.....and be like the past 21 Canes teams...mediocre at best!!!!! I said it once, I'll say it again, nobody plays great every week, no matter how much talent you have. I believe Murphy was a 5 star qb when he committed to Texas.
Some weeks u just can't get out of your own way. These teams are starting to keep their safties back and not give up the big play. Need to utilize the TE and backs a little more in the pass game.
We aren't equipped to be a good man to man team on defense. Not enough big time talent at the position. Guidry probably needs to mix more zone as we ain't getting to the qb quick enough, this hopefully will be addressed as our DT's are ok and a little under sized. Our talent is young at that position and seeing limited action.

In order for us to have a shot at a ship, something needs to give with Guidry and this dee. Baron has basically disappeared the last several games. Our secondary is a piece of burnt toast waiting to happen.
We are sloppy tacklers and we take bad angles.
We are not getting to the qb quick enough and therefore our lead footed secondary gets exposed. We really only have 1 above average an that is a Fr. OJ Fredirique.
We need more size on the interior.
Then there is the stupid penalties.
A quality qb would carve us up. We are ok against the run but we get gashed at times. Tessitore was right saying we can score against anybody.
We are what we are, an offensive machine with a sieve for a defense, that will need a couple miracles to help us not be derailed.

As bad as Miami's D usually looks, they're 9-0, and Louisville is about to close out Clemson. With SMU appearing to be defeating Pitt, this would leave 2 undefeated in ACC play in UM and SMU, aka UM West, with our old OC and a load of former players. It can be frustrating to watch the Canes often, but they keep winning. Next up, 11/9 at GT, in what I'm calling the "kneematch."
