Your Miami Hurricanes and their fans will be watching the 2024 college football playoffs from their couches at home due to two crucial and inexplicable late season losses to Georgia Tech and Syracuse.
There is no question that neither team had better talent on their roster than Miami, but they both apparently had much better coaching.
Mario had it made until he messed it up. No reasons, no excuses, just simply not good enough in spite of having a Heisman Finalist at QB.
Yes, I said it.
So instead, we will grab our favorite adult beverages, some popcorn and a burger or hot dog from the grill and root for the teams we think will advance from the first round of this post-season fiasco.
Here are the games. Let's play "Pick the Winners" against the spread and the over/unders just for fun and games.
#10 Indiana at #7 Notre Dame: Spread ND -7.5 and O/U is 50.5
#11 SMU at #6 Penn State: Spread Penn State -8.5 and O/U is 54
#12 Clemson at #5 Texas: Texas -11 and O/U is 51.5
9 Tennessee at #8 Ohio State: Spread OSU -7-5 and O/U is 47.5
Tell me your picks, favorite underdog and and best bet that's a sure lock!
I think Tennessee can beat Ohio State. And I think the OVER may hit.
I would live to see SMU beat Penn State, but don't think that will happen.
Texas will beat Clemson but by 11 points?
Noter Dame will dispatch of Indiana easily and beat the spread.

Kidd showed up against the #1 team in the nation tonight. Stanton-McCray acquitted himself ok too.
Going to be an extremely long basketball season again if the too many of the similar skill set guards can't get it together enough at the same time to even be worthy of rotation minutes between four of them.

Belichick has been offered the UNCjob. He's 72 and his girlfriend is 24. I don't know that college is going to be a good place for him. Too much distraction if that's possible for Bill. Then again he could pull a Bobby Petrino and go for a motorcycle ride
Posted by: Old Skool | December 10, 2024 at 08:41 PM
I would flip the spread on the OSU game. I think Tennessee will win that game and the points are a bonus. And I think SMU can beat Penn State as well. That’s a lot of points going to SMU. Those are the only two really lopsided spreads that I see.
Posted by: Sarasota 'cane | December 10, 2024 at 09:04 PM
If Belichik tires of older (24 y/o) women, UNC would be a perfect place to find some new blood. Ok...not funny
More rumors that UM may not be as interested in signing a qb, thinking that the qb room may be deep enough and to avoid losing present members from that room. Who knows what will happen? More usually happens in the next portal season than this one anyway. If they don't spend big on qb, hopefully they can at DT, S, CB, LB, etc. Think they'll likely now need another RB, but not a high priced one given the room is pretty good but less deep and without a Martinez or Fletcher like bruiser other than Fletcher. They could possibly go for a WR/return guy, too.

Dam, SEC didn't do Okalahoma any favors, in a 4 week span they have Texas, Georgia, Ole Miss and Tenn and Finishes with Bama, Missouri and LSU. We have nothing to complain about scheduling wise. Try navigating their schedule.

Posted by: 58 Straight | December 11, 2024 at 11:27 PM
Funny about this one.....a friend of mine was complaining to me yesterday said why would they hire this guy? he's a Yankee.....I laughed at him!!!!
BB was born in Nashville TN 1952.....home of country music!!!!
Hard to say how he will do....but he has won a bit in his career!
We better be looking QB first before anything....the kid who QB'd my HS team this year is better than any of them! There is not one good complete QB on campus....no QB poor season in 2025.....back to the SOS!!!!
We got ND in the opener....0-1! FL....they were playing really well at seasons end....that schedule and they went 7-5 with not a lot of talent to start season...can you say coaching? The Ville...Cuse, Pitt, SMU.....6 losses to me with another statue at QB.....
6-6 is firing time....get the paint, get the banner, fire up the plane.....to me CMC has been a big disappointment......meanwhile Oregon goes from average or better team to #1.....love Lanning young and aggressive....he has that program rolling....we are rolling too...rolling and wallowing in ...well....S**T!!!!!!
I hate losing and it looks thats where we are going to return to!!!! IJS

The OL was not bad against inferior competition, but the last 6 games they were not as good. Glad for Cam...good kid....a bit cocky I did not like waving the elephant trunk crap....I do not like any of that stuff....so glad the turnover chain is gone....hated that....

Nevin Shapiro was one of the 1,499 folks pardoned, fwiw. Not waxing political...just sharing info

Nevin helped Joe by those mansions of course not being political.
Yes we do need a qb. William's would be serviceable, in The Herb's humble opinion but with our schedule next year, serviceable ain't going to get it.
Naturally, we will once again raid the portal looking for DB's and DT's. Hopefully, this time, he is looking for size and speed. No since in bringing in 285lb DT's or lead footed Db's.
Will also need another rb and a WR or 2. Tall and fast preferably for the WR's.
With the total number of players now at 105 you need to hit with Evaluations. Won't be to many walk ones.
They seem to also be looking to add a TE and LB. I think we are ok at those positions but if u can add talent why not.
Probably go after another center too.
The class we brought in was ok. A solid B but I don't see anything overwhelming. We shyt ourselves by not winning the conference. Nobody to blame but ourselves.Everything laying at our feet and we trip over ourselves. Those ops don't come around to often, unless you are Bama, OSU & Georgia. You can now add Oregon and Texas in that group as well. We can't even win the sorry azz ACC.
Mario gets 5 years to turn this thing around. 8-4 would be a slide back next year but unless we get someone like Mateer, sliding back it will be. The 5th year is a make it or out you go Mario. Consolation games are not what u are getting pd. for and by the way why is Guidry still their?
Posted by: Herbieibis | December 14, 2024 at 06:14 PM
Herb- I agree. Guidry should have been fired the day after recruits signed. He is so clueless!
JC - can you send a link. I can’t find anything regarding Cam and the Davey O’Brien award. Thx
Posted by: AeroCane | December 14, 2024 at 07:11 PM
Shapiro was a thief big one. I hate thieves and liars. Guess he got a break. Don't agree but its a power that is legit.
Pround of Cam....best season for a Miami QB ever. Always felt KD11 and several others were UMs best, but CW1 best 1 year QB ever at UM statistically....but I would rather win a NC....heck an ACC. Read older article where he says UM deserves to be in playoff...cannot agree. Weak schedule, lots of luck rather than lots of skill vs VT Cal Ville, very poor defense all year, OL over rated, and could not go on the road and win vs GT and Cuse when you needed to win. Pop Tart is about right. Had we gone to say Reliaquest in Tampa, we would have to play Bama or Michigan.....both would kill us. Bama outskill us, Michigan out physical us.
I look back and enjoyed the season in ways, but it got worse and worse as season went on...and the competition got better. GT and Cuse were better teams. Not because of their number of stars, or class recruiting rank, or HS All Americans, or athleticism not at all. They were well coached disciplined and executed fundamentals of football...block and tackle. We are not disciplined do not execute and are not well coached. We have no serious QB in house....we could go 6-6 looking at the schedule. Unfortunately 10-2 is a blip on the radar for us as we have avgd 8 wins a year since Fiesta.
Got to have a QB who can move not these cement shoed statue soft shoe shufflers in our QB room.
Posted by: VA Cane | December 15, 2024 at 07:55 AM
Well you can stick a fork in the Dolphins playoff hopes. There’s zero sense of urgency with this team. Two weeks in a row they’ve made mediocre teams look like contenders. I’m so sick of this shiz!
Grrrrr Dolphins…
Posted by: Sarasota 'cane | December 15, 2024 at 04:06 PM
Sota - you should be! Ross is a horrible owner and should have fired Grier with Flores! Then we wouldn’t have our fake offensive guru as a head coach, our horrendous ST coach wouldn’t be here, and most importantly, we would not of signed Tua to a long term deal!

The Pop Tarts Bowl Trophy is also a fully functioning toaster that can toast two Pop Tarts simultaneously! You can’t make this shiz up!
And I’m beginning to think that UM will fall further behind in the arms race of college football. We cannot compete with the major state schools financially, nor should they IMO.
If the ACC collapses and UM is left without a major conference suitor, they should move down and play at a level of the game that they can afford and be successful at. The Bowl Championship Playoffs is like Formula One, maybe Miami should be shooting for a NASCAR alternative. A league that caps spending and puts the emphasis back on why a college or university exists in the first place. The current upper tier model is only sustainable for like 5-10 schools, yet all the others pile in as if they will get into that club. That’s unattainable for most schools, and it’s certainly not attainable for most private schools not named Notre Dame.
I can get just as much enjoyment watching a competitive MAC game on a Wednesday night as I do watching two SEC powerhouse teams play on Saturday afternoon. Something’s gotta give.
Go ‘canes!

And surprisingly, I. Horton enters the portal
Posted by: JCane | December 16, 2024 at 12:49 PM
Plain and simple, there needs to be a salary cap in college football. Secondly, you get one free portal entry and play right away other wise the second visit to the portal u sit for a year unless you have graduated. Ping ponging all over the place is BS.
The big question for me today, why is Horton exploring the portal. Maybe he's seen enough to know next year would be a big step back.
The college game has gotten way out of hand and the big dogs. In the 2 big conferences will be walking the dog on everyone else. Look at the recruiting rankings.
It's going to be an uncle George moment before to long "Yum Yum, Eatem up"

NIL & Transfer Portal.
This is a classic colective action dilemma. What's GOOD for college footbal players individually is BAD for college football collectively.
Posted by: W | December 16, 2024 at 01:46 PM
Yes I agree....transfer 3x like Oregon QB....not right. I read TVD is in for another go....3 schools BS!!!! Too much money in the game for me. I love the game and want it to be entertaining....GA QB driving a Maserati or something....BS. I had a VW when I was at VT. I could see all kids each player getting money to spend and enjoy.....I got no problem paying the school, food, books etc....then give each kid 3 or 4K a month...decent money and also teach them how to manage money.
I agree Sota.....we are falling behind....do not see competing with the playoff teams any time soon....drop down a level keep educating people and we may do well at the level. It is something to think about!
Posted by: VA Cane | December 16, 2024 at 02:47 PM
If we gave Horton Sam browns reps he might be staying! Brown was terrible and Horton in general terrific! If Dawson had more imagination he could have found more ways to use him! Maybe eliminate some of the runs up the middle and go deep to him
Posted by: AeroCane | December 16, 2024 at 05:26 PM
Same schools who dominate recruiting will do the same in the portal.
Posted by: Herbieibis | December 16, 2024 at 08:51 PM
Air Noland in the portal. Took the money and ran from us.
Oaklahoma is 100% for Mateer. Don't know who he would throw to because OU has 6 WR's in the portal, plus their OH line sucked but hey, at least his old OC is there.
Posted by: Herbieibis | December 16, 2024 at 11:04 PM
Unfortunately, there is a lot in play, Herb, W, ...As long as we have no collective bargaining agreement type situation, and there are high bidders who keep outdoing each other with some schools with crazy payrolls allotted, there are going to be a few that win out in recruiting a lot more often. It isn't hard to see who has the most, like Bama, OSU, Oregon, LSU, Georgia, Texas, Michigan (at least now). Gee, who was Horton linked to within minutes of entering the portal today? Hmmm, couldn't be Bama, could it? They just happen to work quickly, I suppose?! To be more specific as to the money involved, I had the privilege of talking with a former well-respected and still well-connected D1 college football coach at an event this past weekend, and we were talking about how things have changed due to NIL, etc. He spoke of several good young players leaving Arkansas, in spite of being SEC, due to having a payroll in the 10-11 million range, due to other schools, like Bama and Texas now being in the 35 to 50 million range, in spite of published articles lately talking about the highest being Texas in the low 20s. The numbers are way higher than advertised for certain schools. UM did a good job, and isn't in the lower tier, but can they truly keep up with these crazy numbers year after year? How many can? There can only be George Steinbrenners out there, for those old enough to get the NY Yankee reference. I love UM sports, but this stuff doesn't make me love college sports anymore.
Posted by: JCane | December 16, 2024 at 11:19 PM
Also, Herb, Oklahoma not only hired the WSU OC, but also the qb coach, so I'd be shocked to see Mateer anywhere else, regardless of how many OU wideouts have disappeared in the portal. Truly, I would have loved to have seen UM get the qb coach from the Cougars. Anyone sensible enough to bring in Ward and Mateer, let alone develop them, sounds pretty good to me.
That being said, I love Luke Nickel's hs development so far, and I think UM has a good future qb, assuming he doesn't get pulled away by a higher paying school up the road. He was responsible for over 400 yrds of offense last week in his GA matchup vs the prior #2 ranked team in GA, doubling them up, 56-28, and the incoming WRs look pretty dang good. The problem is they suddenly don't have a lot of WRs, let alone WRs with experience.

"If Dawson had more imagination he could have found more ways to use him! Maybe eliminate some of the runs up the middle and go deep to him
Posted by: AeroCane | December 16, 2024 at 05:26 PM "
#1 offense in the nation, but please, continue to backseat drive it in hindsight.
How's Colby Young's playing career working out in the greener pasture again? Oh that's right, don't let the toilet tank cap hit you on the flush out the pipe, plenty of talent to get better with at that spot all over the nation in high school and looking for new college teams.
2001's big question mark preseason, who would Dorsey throw to with both Moss and Wayne gone, that's a guy who should be in the pro hall of fame and a near hall of fame candidate alternatively, new QB is a bigger question than WR route fillers at this point for 2025.
Posted by: orange 'n green in the vein | December 17, 2024 at 07:24 AM
Agreed, OGV. We won't have a lot of proven WRs going forward, but there is plenty of talent, and I'd assume we'll also get 1-2 WRs in the portal to boot. The money may be better for Horton at Bama, if he ends up there, but it doesn't mean his career or future will be. I think our QB situation looks pretty bright honestly, as Emory Williams, although unproven, could be a pretty damn good qb. He is said to be extremely accurate at practice, along with being a bright guy. The QB room isn't very full though, Nickel will be a true freshman, and that leaves only Judd Anderson backing up without bringing someone in through the portal to at least compete.
Posted by: JCane | December 17, 2024 at 10:12 AM
Without Horton, it will up the need for the big WR, like incoming Josh Moore, who looks like a great pickup who flipped from UF, someone in the portal, and/or more use of TEs

U are correct Sir.
And now I can add: "I told U so!"
Posted by: 58 Straight | December 17, 2024 at 03:13 PM
If we don't get Mateer, the we still need another qb who had played, then somebody like Mendoza probably would be a fit and let him battle it with Williams.
If this turns out to be the route we go and if it isn't a Mendoza type qb, then Williams will be the guy. Just know we will struggle to win 6 games while he's on the learning curve.
Posted by: Herbieibis | December 17, 2024 at 04:27 PM
I don't think the U is going after Mendoza, Herb, although I think they want to get at least one guy who can compete and at least push Emory, IF they can't get Mateer. I'm not sure there is anyone else they put into Mateer's category who clearly demonstrates being an upgrade/fit with this team and style. As for Mateer, he is in the middle of a visit with OU now, so if UM can avoid Mateer committing to OU over the next day, they should have a fighting chance. UM should be able to remind that being a qb at OU wasn't so great last year with a terrible OL (I think double the # of sacks given up than the Canes) and Arnold not exactly loving it, in spite of having been a 5 star. Just let it play out. That being said, I still don't like the idea of not letting our h.s. qb recruits get opportunities at some point in terms of future recruiting....but if you can get a likely clear upgrade..

Isaiah Horton is working on a contract with Alabama; and Sam Brown likely will turn pro, according to Canesport.

and CJ Daniels has officially made moved from LSU to UM for his last yr of eligibility. He is a 6'2" WR, so although not quite as big as Horton, provides a big target.
